Davis Reef

Davis Reef is one of only a handful of Florida Keys reefs formally protected as a Sanctuary Preservation Area, designated specifically to safeguard its exceptional gorgonians. At 15 to 30 feet, it's accessible to all levels, offers some of the richest soft coral diving in the Upper Keys, and comes with one of the more unusual dive site traditions in Islamorada: rubbing Buddha's Belly for luck.

About Davis Reef

Davis Reef earned its protected status for a specific reason — the gorgonians. Sea rods, sea whips, sea feathers, and sea fans grow here in concentrations dense enough that resource managers designated it an 88-acre Sanctuary Preservation Area within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, explicitly to protect them. No fishing. No harvesting. The reef has been left to grow, and it shows. The soft coral coverage at Davis is among the best on any shallow reef IDC visits.

The ledge system runs along the reef at depths of 15 to 30 feet — a 5 to 10 foot high escarpment that shelters the large brain coral formations the site is built around. It's easy to navigate and easy to read, which makes it a natural choice for newer divers and Discover Scuba guests. It's also a popular night dive: the ledge structure, predictable navigation, and high turtle activity after dark make it one of the more reliably rewarding nighttime dives in Islamorada.

The Buddha has been here since 1989 — a smiling statue placed next to a large brain coral, now decorated with encrusting growth like everything else at this depth after three decades on the bottom. The original was stolen, as these things sometimes go in the Keys, and was replaced. Divers rub its belly before descending, which may or may not improve the dive but has become part of the ritual. Green Moray Eels, Nurse Sharks, and Southern Stingrays share the ledge space with the statue and appear to be entirely unbothered by the tradition.

Dense schools of Grunts, Goatfish, Schoolmaster Snapper, and Parrotfish fill the water column throughout the dive. Large brain coral heads anchor the scene. The combination of protected status, exceptional soft coral, a genuine underwater landmark, and consistent marine life makes Davis Reef one of the most reliably satisfying shallow dives on IDC's rotation.
