Large coral heads, purple gorgonians, resident sea turtles, and schools of fish so dense they block out the light, Rocky Top earns its reputation as one of the most life-packed reefs in Islamorada.
Rocky Top rises from a sea grass flat a few miles offshore from Islamorada, its coral heads climbing as high as 15 feet from the sand. The moment you drop in, you understand what all the fuss is about. This reef doesn't just have marine life — it has density. Fish fill every layer of the water column, from the sand below to the surface above, and the coral architecture itself is some of the healthiest you'll find anywhere along the Florida Keys reef tract.
The reef is defined by broad brain and star coral formations surrounded by a forest of purple gorgonians — sea fans and sea plumes that sway in the gentle current and give the site a softness that contrasts beautifully with the hard coral structure beneath. Nurse sharks tuck under the ledges. Turtles cruise the top of the reef with the unhurried confidence of animals that know nothing here is going to bother them. Bonnethead sharks are a regular presence for much of the year, and spotted eagle rays pass through on their own schedule.
Rocky Top is also one of the Florida Keys sites where active coral restoration is underway — staghorn, brain, and star coral outplantings are taking hold here, giving the reef new growth where it needs it most. Diving here means you're witnessing a reef in the process of recovery, which adds a dimension to the dive that no briefing can fully prepare you for.
At 20 to 30 feet, Rocky Top is accessible to brand-new divers and snorkelers alike — but it's also the kind of site that experienced divers keep coming back to, simply because no two dives here are the same.
