Hens and Chickens is a 106-acre Sanctuary Preservation Area off Plantation Key. A shallow reef of clustered coral formations with brain and star coral mounds reaching up to 15 feet in height, a dense forest of purple sea fans, and the kind of structural complexity that makes a 10 to 20 foot dive feel far bigger than it should.
The name comes from above. From the air, the reef layout looks exactly like what it's called — a large central coral formation, the hen, surrounded by smaller clustered outcroppings, the chicks. From underwater, the resemblance fades and something more impressive takes over.
The coral heads here are not typical Keys patch reef scale. Brain and star coral mounds at Hens and Chickens reach up to 15 feet in height — in 10 to 20 feet of water, that means the tops of these formations are within feet of the surface, and their bases sit on sand. The mounds are densely grouped, and the channels between them create a genuine labyrinth. Navigation here isn't about compass headings; it's about working through a three-dimensional maze of coral architecture that rewards exploration at every turn. Purple sea fans fill the spaces between the hard coral formations, giving the site a layered density of color and texture that experienced divers consistently call one of the most visually striking shallow dives in the Keys.
The site sits within a 106-acre Sanctuary Preservation Area, designated by NOAA to protect its large populations of ESA-listed star and brain corals — the same formations that make the reef so visually compelling. The formal protection has allowed the fish life to develop accordingly. Huge schools of Yellowtail Snapper and Grunts move through the formations in dense curtains. Spotted Eagle Rays have been sighted here with unusual regularity for an inner reef site. Tarpon frequent the area, particularly around the old iron barge wreck partially visible within the reef structure — a brick-laden vessel that reportedly went down in 1949 and has since been absorbed into the surrounding coral.
Hens and Chickens is two miles offshore and accessible to divers and snorkelers of every level. On days with good visibility, the IDC crew considers it one of the most beautiful reefs in the area.
