A wide reef running 30 to 90 feet with a defining sand channel that runs its entire length — visible from above like an actual runway. Popular with fishermen for the same bottom contours that make it productive for divers. Also IDC's regular reef cleanup site, where the crew pulls abandoned anchors, fishing line, and debris from the bottom.
The name comes from the view you'd have from above. A single sand channel runs the full length of the site — straight, wide, and flanked by reef on both sides — in a layout that reads unmistakably like a runway from the surface. It's one of those sites where the description takes about three seconds and is immediately accurate.
The same bottom contours that give Runway its shape also make it one of the more productive fishing spots in the area. The channel acts as a natural funnel for fish movement, and the reef edges on either side provide the kind of structure that concentrates marine life at predictable points. Fishermen know this. IDC knows this too — which is part of why the site also functions as IDC's regular reef cleanup location. The combination of heavy fishing traffic and a bottom profile that catches and holds gear means anchors, fishing line, and tackle accumulate here over time. IDC's crew makes regular passes to pull what they find.
It's a practical expression of something IDC takes seriously: these reefs aren't visited once and left. The same sites the crew dives for paying guests are the sites they're maintaining on the days in between. Runway just happens to need the attention more than most.
The dive itself covers meaningful depth range — 30 feet at the top of the reef to 90 in the deeper channel sections — with good coral structure along the edges and the typical Florida Keys reef fish population throughout. The channel bottom is worth checking for rays and larger bottom-dwelling species that use the open sand.
